How to Make Summer Treats

HOT TO MAKE SUMMER TREATS: LOLLIES & SMOOTHIES

Summer is here, bringing long, hot, sunny days when we can enjoy spending time in our garden or local parks. Slip on your favourite print dress, grab your picnic hamper and get set to enjoy the summer sun.

Keeping cool is essential, and what better way to do that than with delicious cooling treats?

Your freezer might be stocked up with lollies, and your fridge filled with store-bought smoothies, but have you ever thought about making your own? This summer, why not try making your own delights for yourself and your little ones - you can experiment with new flavours or stick to family favourites

HOW TO MAKE RASPBERRY ICE LOLLIES

When it comes to instant refreshment, it's hard to beat the humble ice lolly. As they're mostly frozen liquid, they are even more refreshing than ice cream and smoothies, so it's a good idea having a good stock of lollies for yourself and the little ones over summer.

The sky's the limit when it comes to creating your own concoctions, but we'd recommend incorporating fruit juices for an extra boost of flavour and vitamins. Who says indulgent treats can't be healthy?

Again, we'd recommend an in-season fruit for an authentic summer taste

INGREDIENTS AND UTENSILS REQUIRED

  • 800m1 berry fruit squash
  • 200g fresh raspberries
  • Sugar or sweetener
  • Blender
  • Lollipop moulds

METHOD:

1. Mix two-thirds of your raspberries and squash in the blender, or whisk by hand. Add your sweetener of choice gradually so you can taste it as you go.

2. Pour the mixture into lollipop moulds, leaving space for some fresh raspberries.

3. Add the rest of your fresh raspberries to the mould until it's filled.

4. Wait about five hours until your lollies are frozen and enjoy them with the little ones.

HOW TO MAKE A BERRY SMOOTHIES

Smoothies are a great summer breakfast when you're in a rush. They also make for a refreshing afternoon drink that delivers plenty of nutrients and flavour. Smoothies are great for parents or kids - pop one in a cooling water bottle in your kids' backpacks for an
extra dose of energy as they run around.

The great thing about smoothies is that you can prepare them in advance, then grab them and go. We love a berry smoothie — there's something so summery about these in-season fruits.

INGREDIENTS AND UTENSILS REQUIRED

  • 1 banana, chopped
  • 200g frozen blueberries
  • 200g frozen raspberries
  • 400g frozen strawberries
  • 100m1 plain or vanilla-flavoured Greek yoghurt
  • 300m1 milk
  • Ice
  • Blender

METHOD:

1. Add the frozen berries to the blender and blitz on a low speed until they're suitably pulped.
2. Add banana and yoghurt to the mixture and blend until they're mixed together.
3. Add some milk gradually until your smoothie is your desired texture.

4. Add your ice, blitz, and enjoy your satisfying, cooling treat! Slip on a cool blue dress and pop your smoothie in an insulated tote bag so that it stays as cool as possible on your journey. If you're spending the day in the garden with your family, add to a large jug and take your favourite glasses or mugs out to enjoy it in.
